St. Charles Takes Two Bi-State Trophies
May 21, 2000

The Bi-State Challenge, an inter-league challenge tournament, was held on Saturday, May 20 in St. Charles. The annual tournament consists of teams from the SCDL, the Mississippi Valley Darting Organization (MVDO), the Southern Illinois Darting Association (SIDA) and the Blueberry Hill in-house league.

St. Charles Dart League teams won the B/Silver division and the C/Bronze division titles and were second in the A/Gold division.

Blueberry Hill Withdraws

The tournament format was heavily modified at the last moment because of the withdrawal of the Blueberry Hill Dart League from the event. Blueberry Hill was unable to field the required 33 players from their small in-house league and as a result the remaining three leagues split each of their teams into two so that a four-round round-robin format could still be played without byes.

Twelve-Hour Tournament

The event was a grueling darts marathon. Scheduled to begin at noon, play actually began at about 12:30 and the last dart was thrown after nearly twelve hours of continuous play. There were many sore arms in the house by the end of the evening!

A/Gold Division

In the A/Gold division, the MVDO teams successfully defended the trophy, winning it for the second year in succession with a combined score of 58 of a possible 88 points. The SCDL A/Gold teams took second place.

The A/Gold SCDL Team #1, captained by Garry Alcorn, included Kevin Saale, Steve Saale, George Arnold, Bob Lockhart and Debbie Hammond. Team #1 finished with 31 of a possible 44 points (which was tied for the single-team high with the MVDO #1 team).

SCDL Team #2 in the A/Gold division was captained by H. "Cowboy" Dixon and included Virgil Smith, Rex Griffin, Phil Lucido, Heidi Custer and Phil Schonhoff. Team #2 finished with 18 points, giving the A/Gold teams a combined 49 out of 88 - nine back of the winning MVDO teams.

B/Silver Division

The B/Silver division, playing a long match format, ran late. The third of four rounds was only finishing up by 11:15 pm so the league officials and the captains of the division decided to end their event then. The SCDL teams won the trophy with a combined score of 40 of a possible 66 points. The MVDO B/Silver teams, who were defending their 1999 title, took second place.

The B/Silver SCDL Team #1, captained by Chip McCoy, included Don Krome, Chris Hoffman, Walt Molnar, Terry Pinkston and Patty Steinmeyer. Team #1 finished with 18 of a possible 33 points.

SCDL Team #2 in the B/Silver division was captained by Darrell Washford and included Rick Reed, Eric Arroyo, Mike Robertson, Tracie Hessling and Kathy VanStrien. Team #2 finished with 22 points, giving the B/Silver teams a combined 40 out of 66 - ten ahead of the second place MVDO teams.

C/Bronze Division

The C/Bronze division SCDL teams won their trophy as well with a combined score of 47 of a possible 76 points. As in the B/Silver competition the defending champions from 1999, the SIDA C/Bronze teams, took second place.

The SCDL C/Bronze Team #1, captained by Mike Young, included Darren Brock, Steve Foust, Aaron Briley, Tracy Farran and Buddy House. The team finished with 26 of a possible 38 points. Team #1's 9-0 win against the SIDA #1 team in the last round clinched the win for St. Charles.

SCDL Team #2 in the C/Bronze division was captained by Gina Martinez and included Jeff Haefner, Peter Kozlowski, Paul Hilliker and Chet Arand. Team #2 finished with 21 points, giving the B/Silver teams a combined 47 out of 76 - twelve ahead of the SIDA teams in second place.
