SCDL Member Stricken with Cancer
February 3, 2001 by Dave Race
Updated! February 14, 2001

In an all too real example of the "Why do bad things happen to good people?" phenomenon, members of the St. Charles Dart League were shocked and saddened to learn last week that 33 year old Keith Schwan has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The cancer has also spread to his liver and spine.

Keith Schwan, Christy and family.Keith has just started his second decade as a member of the League, having started, as we all do, non-rated for The Garage Bar in 1991. Keith has risen rapidly in the rankings finally attaining the coveted "A" rating in 1994. He has played in the A2 and/or A1 divisions pretty much ever since. This season he is playing Thursday A2 for Classics II and has played for Classics II, formerly The Garage Bar, for his entire career.

Keith & Christy are proud new parents of their 4th child, a 5 lb. 2 oz. baby girl, born on February 11. The baby joins brothers Kyle, 10, and Cameron, 8, and sister Emma, 4. It was a difficult pregnancy for Christy, who is currently on "light-duty" as ordered by her doctor. Keith, a self-employed painter, has no insurance. The Board of Directors voted at their meeting on January 31 to donate all proceeds over & above expenses from the upcoming St. Charles Dart League Open to the Schwans. At this writing Classics II, Lynnie's Eagle's Nest Pub and Timothy's Irish Pub have put fund-raising jars out at the bar. Collection jars are also available at the 7-11 at Mexico and Kimberly and the Dirt Cheap Cigarettes and Beer store on West Clay.

Classics II has scheduled a benefit tournament for Saturday, February 24th and Lynnie's Eagle's Nest Pub plans on conducting several fund raising events at their Second Annual Margaritaville Dart Tournament, on the same day. Contact Terri Duckett at Classics II or Sue Mullens for current information and plans.

Keith was at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, but was sent home today, February 3. Visitors are welcome, but you might want to call beforehand and make sure he's "up" for the company. You can also reach Keith via email at keithschwan@hotmail.com.
