Bi-State Challenge Tournament Played

May 23, 1999

The Bi-State Challenge Tournament was played on Saturday, May 22 in Collinsville, IL. The M.V.D.O. took two of the trophies and the S.I.D.A. took the third. The tournament, which took almost twelve hours to play, was attended by nearly 100 of the best dart throwers in the St. Louis area.

In the Gold Division, the M.V.D.O. team ran away with it, winning an amazing 33 out of a possible 39 points. The St. Charles team was a distant second with 19 points.

The M.V.D.O. made it 2 out of 3 by winning the Silver Division as well, with 24 points. St. Charles again finished second with 19 points, coming from behind.

In the Bronze Division, the Southern Illinois team squeaked out a 1-point victory over the M.V.D.O. team, 25 to 24, and stopped the M.V.D.O. juggernaught from completing a sweep.

Bi-State Challenge Tournament Saturday

May 19, 1999

The Bi-State Challenge Tournament is set for this Saturday in Collinsville, IL. The SCDL has rented a bus for the trip that will leave from the commuter parking lot a I-70 and 5th Street in St. Charles at 10 a.m.

The trip from St. Charles is complicated by the fact the I-70 will be closed for construction at Union Blvd. in St. Louis. An alternate route is US 40 (I-64) downtown to where it joins I-70/I-55 across the Mississippi River.

Bi-State Qualifying Playoffs Scheduled

May 2, 1999

The SCDL Board of Directors announced today that the qualifying playoffs for the league representatives to the Bi-State Challenge Tournament will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 1999 at Eagle's Nest Pub. The Silver (B1/B2) playoff and the Bronze (B3/C) playoff will be held simultaneously.

The combined A Division Championship was played on May 1 between the A1 Division playoff winner, "Rat Pack" (Classics II) and the A2 Division playoff winner, "Rat Bastards" (O'Shannigan's). The Championship, and the right to represent the league as the Gold team, was won by the "Rat Pack".

The Silver playoff will match the B1 Division Champion, "SPANK-U!" (Hot Shots, Thursday B1) against the B2 Division Champion, "Classics II; Westerhold" (Classics II, Thursday B2 White).

The Bronze playoff will match the B3 Division Champion, "For a Kight" (The Last Stop, Thursday B3 Red) against the C Division Champion, "Cotton Club" (O'Shannigan's, Thursday C).

The date and venue were chosen because all four of the teams involved are Thursday teams and none of them are sponsored by the Eagle's Nest Pub. Also, at least 8 dartboards were considered desirable for this event.

Congratulations to all six of our champion teams! See the complete results of all the playoffs and Traveling Trophy Championships on the Standings Page.

Bi-State Update!

April 19, 1999

The Bi-State Challenge Tournament Committee met again on Sunday, April 18 at the Travel Lodge in Collinsville to make last minute adjustments and arrangements for the tournament. No changes to the format were made at the meeting.

The countdown is on!

Bi-State Tournament To Resume

February 23, 1999

Representatives from four of the area's largest steel-tip dart leagues met on February 21 for an initial planning meeting to revive the old Bi-State inter-league tournament. The Bi-State Tournament has not been held for at least 10 years.

The tournament, to be called the Bi-State Challenge, is tentatively scheduled for May 22, 1999 at the Bourbon Street Bar & Grill in the Travel Lodge in Collinsville, Illinois. This is the same venue that hosted the last October Fall-Stars tournament between the SCDL and SIDA in October, 1998. The host duties for the tournament will rotate to each league in turn.

Attending the meeting at the Blueberry Hill Restaurant in University City were Laura Griffin, Scott Martin and H. "Cowboy" Dixon representing the St. Charles Dart League (SCDL), Mal Corcoran and Chuck Solinski, President of the Mississippi Valley Darting Organization (MVDO), Bill Hill and Kim Paul of the Southern Illinois Darting Association (SIDA) and Matt Cullen of the Blueberry Hill Dart League. Bob Vincent, editor of the Dart News newspaper also attended the meeting.

Laura Griffin, President of the SCDL, was selected as chairman of the Bi-State Challenge Tournament Committee. Laura has been the primary instigator behind the efforts to revive the tournament.

Charitable Benefit and Sponsors

The Bob Costas Cancer Fund was selected as the charitable beneficiary of the tournament. The fund will receive any money remaining after expenses as well as fund raising events at the tournament itself, such as 50/50 raffles.

The St. Louis Dart Shop, owned by Joyce and Michael Stafos, has already agreed to sponsor much of the tournament cost, including individual trophies and Traveling Trophies. The Dart News has agreed to donate a full-page advertisement for the tournament to attract spectators.

Other sponsors will be sought in order to build the cash reserve beyond expenses for the charitable donation. The committee agreed that any donation of $75 or more will earn a mention in the tournament advertisement, in order of the size of the donation.

Round Robin Format

Three teams from each league, an A division, a B division and a C division team, will meet. Each division team will play the other three league's teams in that division in a round-robin format with total points from the three rounds determining the winner (similar to a short league season). The teams will be selected by each league and may be their season champions or an all-star team. Each team will need eight players. All teams must qualify for their respective division by their own league rules.

The SCDL will invite the winners of the Traveling Trophy Championship to represent the league. The SCDL Board of Directors has not yet determined the method that will be used to reduce the five SCDL champions to three representative teams but some type of qualifying playoff is considered likely. If the Champion team has fewer than eight players, they may recruit players from the second place team in the qualifying playoff to fill their roster.

Each division will play a different format but each will consist of a team game, doubles and singles.
